The Phantom of the Opera is composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's award-winning musical, now playing at His Majesty's Theatre in London. Opening in the West End in 1986, it won the Tony Award for Best Musical two years later. In September 2006, it broke the record held by Cats, another Webber's musical, becoming the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The story is a gothic (哥特风格的) romance based on Gaston Leroux's novel launched in 1910. It follows a mysterious masked figure who appears at the Paris Opera House and his strong interest with a young singer, Christine Daaé. As he helps her rise to fame, he becomes increasingly dangerous, leading to a dramatic ending. The London production is famous for its splendid set design, including a turning stage, a grand staircase, and a large luxurious light that hangs from the ceiling. Unforgettable songs include The Music of the Night and All I Ask of You.

I once attended a French immersion (沉浸) program in France. On the first day, the school director warned: “Speak even a word of English and you will be fined two euros.” I began to wonder if it was a wise decision.

My interest in French began in high school, but university courses bored me. Years later, my children attended a French immersion school, and my enthusiasm returned—though I was too busy to study myself. A couple of years ago, a neighbour fluent in French shared stories of traveling in France. I was envious. The next morning, I woke up and decided to create my own luck. Though in my mid-60s, I still enjoyed challenges.

Three months later, I arrived in Paris for a month of French studies. We were immersed in French eight hours a day. Fellow students came from around the world: a Chinese lady wanted to perfect her French to fully appreciate the rich cultural heritage of France; a Turkish graduate hoped to land a job in Europe; many, like me, sought a personal challenge.

The first week was exhausting. My head ached from the constant stimulation of learning. I routinely embarrassed myself. With only a limited French vocabulary, I couldn’t tell any of my usual stories and jokes. After much practice, I finally developed an amusing story to tell to whomever I sat with. Yes, the same story every day. At least I was never fined two euros!

Gradually, the immersion worked. My brain shifted to French at the school gate. One day, I met an American lady I had spoken with in English the day before in a restaurant. On school grounds, I walked past her without a greeting—paying a thousand euros as punishment would do! During the four weeks, I made significant progress. On the last day, I presented a paper in French.

Attending the program inspired me to continue my French learning. And I’ve signed up for another session this spring. I can’t wait to get there and embarrass myself again!

24. Why did the author question her decision on the first day of the program?

A. It was too boring.

B. It cost much money.

C. It had a strict rule.

D. It had a tight schedule.

25. What drove the author to start French studies in Paris?

A. Her children’s French learning.

B. The desire to prove herself young.

C. More free time after retirement.

D. Her neighbor’s travelling experiences.

26. Why did the author walk past the American lady without greeting her?

A. She was in a hurry.

B. She failed to recognize her.

C. She was afraid of being fined.

D. She focused on her French thinking.

27. What does the author want to convey?

A. Well begun is half done.

B. It’s never too late to learn.

C. Rules are made to be broken.

D. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Not long ago, being “ready for the workforce” meant completing a degree, landing a job and building a clearly defined career path. But in 2025, readiness looks different. It’s not a milestone we reach once but a constant exercise.

In fact, 70% of U.S. workers say they feel unprepared for today’s workforce, and nearly three-quarters worry they won’t be able to adapt in the next five years, according to a new report. Traditional education and career systems prioritized linear career paths and fixed roles. But today’s world demands something more fluid. With technology like AI evolving faster than any curriculum (课程) can keep pace and entire industries being upended, it’s no wonder so many feel uncertain. In this environment, workforce readiness means being digitally literate, willing to continuously develop skills and adaptable, as well as having more than a little curiosity.

Workers want to understand which skills and credentials (资格证书) matter. Educators and employers can help by connecting learning with real-world applications and creating accessible opportunities, such as micro-credentials and short certificate programs to upskill quickly and affordably.

Still, readiness can show differently across generations. Our report found most young professionals say they’re struggling to find their footing, with 87% of Generation Zs feeling unprepared for the competitive job market. Now, with AI quickly tackling tasks such as coding, data analysis and even editing, “soft skills” including teamwork, empathy and problem-solving are more important than ever. Generation Ys occupy a unique middle ground, as 72% say they feel unprepared for today’s workforce. For Generation Xers and Baby Boomers who may feel steadier, the pace of change means the skills they used to rely on may not remain relevant for long. Continuing education can go a long way in helping mid-level workers stay current with the market.

Whatever their level, workers need curiosity and drive. Educators should provide flexible learning that meets people where they are. Employers need to offer support, guidance and space to reskill. We can build the capacity to adapt. That’s what readiness really is—not a state of arrival, but a shared commitment to growth.

28. What does the underlined word “fluid” in paragraph 2 mean?

A. Practical.

B. Challenging.

C. Predictable.

D. Dynamic.

29. What does the report find about different generations in the workforce?

A. Generation Z has the highest rate of feeling unprepared.

B. Generation Ys worry less about their future careers.

C. Generation Xers and Baby Boomers have ever-relevant skills.

D. Older generations need no further education.

30. What is suggested to help workers stay current?

A. Prioritizing advanced technical knowledge.

B. Sticking to long-established working routines.

C. Seeking higher academic degrees continuously.

D. Taking short-term skill-focused training programs.

31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To explain modern workforce readiness.

B. To argue against outdated education systems.

C. To recommend personal development courses.

D. To compare job performances of different generations.

New research has found that scientists studying sea-level rise have been using methods that underestimate how high the water already is. One result is that hundreds of millions more people worldwide are already living dangerously close to the rising ocean than previously estimated.

The study, published in Nature, shows that coastal sea levels are on average eight inches to a foot higher than many global maps and models suggest. The differences are especially large in Southeast Asia and Pacific nations. Scientists have often been working from the wrong starting point when calculating what land and populations might be affected in the future.

That matters as policymakers turn to science to understand how much land and how many people may be affected as the world warms and oceans rise. The new study has identified far-reaching problems in the method that researchers often use to understand coastlines and how they might change in a warming climate. It checked 385 other papers and found that less than 1 percent had correctly assessed where sea levels are today.

For decades, scientists have used a satellite-based gravitational-field model. However, other instruments can measure real sea level and reveal local differences from factors like currents, winds and tides, which can also influence sea levels but are not included in the gravitational-field model. Scientists can most accurately estimate sea level when both pieces of the puzzle are combined correctly.

But the study found that hasn’t been the case. Some 90 percent of the studies relied only on the gravitational-field method. Another 9 percent used both kinds of data but failed to combine them properly.

It was 10 years ago, on the shores of the Mekong delta in Southern Vietnam, where Dr. Minderhoud, the senior author of the paper, first realized there may be a difference. He said the study shows that methods of studying sea level rise that seemed to work relatively well for coastlines in Europe or the United States led to bigger gaps in other parts of the world.

Torbjørn Tornqvist, a professor at Tulane University who was not involved with the study, said the findings were a real “wake up call” with wide implications.

32. Why is the research finding of great importance?

A. It helps improve technologies of measuring sea levels.

B. It has persuaded scientists to change research methods.

C. It explains why sea levels keep rising around the world.

D. It offers policymakers more reliable scientific evidence.

33. What is the big problem with the commonly used method?

A. It relies on invalid data.

B. It leaves out real local factors.

C. It overestimates the risks.

D. It ignores the effect of global warming.

34. What can be inferred from Dr. Minderhoud’s experience in Vietnam?

A. Local observations are less reliable than satellite data.

B. Methods used in Europe may not apply well globally.

C. The Mekong delta is the most threatened coastal area.

D. Scientists need longer time to detect sea-level changes.

35. What is the best title of the text?

A. Sea Levels are Higher than Assumed

B. Climate Change Threatens Human Survival

C. Global Warming Causes Sea Level Rise

D. Satellite Data Improves Research Accuracy

第二节 (满分 25 )

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last week in biology class, the teacher had the students pair up to care for a plant or a small animal for a month. Alex and Sam became partners. They picked out a little hamster (仓鼠) with soft brown fur and shiny black eyes. They named it Peanut and set up a cage for it on the bookshelf next to their desks.

They took turns feeding Peanut, cleaning the cage and giving it water. Alex liked watching Peanut run on the wheel in the cage. Sam liked holding it gently. Peanut soon became the class star. Everyone passing by would stop and say hi. Some even brought vegetable pieces and Peanut would eat them greedily.

One morning, it was Alex’s turn to clean the cage. He took Peanut out and set it on a chair while he cleaned the plastic base. When he finished and looked back, Peanut was gone. Alex’s heart sank. He got down on his hands and knees and searched under the desks, his face pale with worry. At that moment, Sam rushed over, face red, blaming Alex for being careless. Alex felt awful but also angry. “Hey, remember yesterday you left the cage door unlocked? So don’t just blame me.” Sam shook his head. “I didn’t lose him today—you did!” They said no more and searched under every chair, behind the bookshelf, and inside desks. But Peanut was nowhere to be seen. Then the bell rang. They had to stop. Sam walked back to his seat, head down. Alex stood there for a second, then did the same. The empty cage sitting on the bookshelf was like a wall standing between them, right in their hearts.

After school, without a word, they both stayed behind. They searched everywhere again but found nothing. Alex was about to give up when he heard a tiny scratching (抓挠) sound. It came from the corner near the bookshelf.

注意:

1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Immediately, Alex rushed to the bookshelf.

Picking Peanut up, Alex and Sam looked at each other, both with a guilty look.

第二节 读后续写 (25 )

Immediately, Alex rushed to the bookshelf. Bending down, he gently moved aside the piled books one by one, his heart pounding with anxiety. There, curling in the narrow space behind the shelf, was Peanut, trembling faintly, its tiny paws still holding a piece of vegetable. Alex let out a long sigh of relief and gently scooped up the little creature into his palms, rubbing his face against its soft fur. At that moment, Sam hurried over, eyes wide with astonishment, and the tense atmosphere between them instantly melted away.

Picking Peanut up, Alex and Sam looked at each other, both with a guilty look. Alex was the first to break the silence, apologizing sincerely for his carelessness. Sam, his face flushed with shame, also apologized for losing his temper and blaming Alex without thinking twice. They carefully placed Peanut back in its cage and secured the door firmly. This small accident taught them a valuable lesson: staying calm and working together. Not only did they regain their lovely little pet, but they also learned to be more responsible and forgiving. Their friendship became deeper and more precious through this experience.
